With the ever-changing Corona Virus situation, many schools and colleges are choosing to carry out video interviews instead of face-to-face ones. So, we’ve put together a few tips to help interviewers and interviewees have a smooth video interview.
Test your tech
Before the interview, make sure all your tech is working. Most video platforms have an area where you can test your audio and video ahead of the interview. If you want to triple check your set up, you can always organise a quick call with a friend or colleague to be sure that everything works.
Check your lighting
Make sure the light in the room is in a good place so that you are not silhouetted. If there is a window in the room that you are using for the interview, sitting, facing the weekend will offer a good level of light.
Sit comfortably
Be mindful of how close you are sat to the camera. Too close and you can make the chat a bit awkward and too far away and you can reduce the audio quality. It’s best to sit comfortably at a table with your head and shoulders visible.
Minimise interruptions
In a face-to-face interview, you would normally make gestures of agreement such as “mmm” or “yes” as the person is talking. Unfortunately, on a video call, interrupting the other person can sometime mute the other persons microphone and can interrupt the other person’s flow. The best way to encourage the person talking or show your agreement to what they are saying, is to simply nod as they talk.
We hope these tips prove helpful for your video interview. If you need any further help, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with your Omnia People Consultant today.
