Support staff play an important part in a school. They cover a variety of roles which can give the educational institution and students the specialist support required.

Schools rely on the know-how and expertise of their support staff and the “support staff” title covers a wide variety of roles including:

Groundskeeper: This role will include maintaining the school grounds, ensuring health and safety measures are in place and keeping equipment are up to date.

Caretaker: A caretaker’s role involves operating and maintaining all areas inside the school. Managing school repairs, waste collection and securing the safety of the school.

Office Manager: An office manager will supervise day to day administration for the school office and their administrative staff. They will organise events and make sure all students and teachers have the correct resources.

Business Manager: A school business manager will advise the headteacher/governors on the school finances. They will also ensure any security and health and safety procedures are followed, along with planning and controlling the budget, maintenance and external contracts.

School Secretary: A school secretary will deal with administration tasks such as typing letters, answering phones, sorting out mail, ordering equipment and paying invoices.

Marketing Manager: A marketing manager will oversee marketing strategies and communication. They will control the media channels, ensure the marketing costs are managed and all campaigns are delivered on time and on budget.

HR Manager: The HR Manager role will encompass all the recruitment and hiring for the school. They will manage the payroll and keep track of teacher/student performance and if necessary implement development to retain employees.

Working in a school may not have been your first idea! However, if having a varied day, involving yourself in the community, working around children or having, what some call, “the best holiday allowance available”; maybe working in school support role could be just right for you.
